Doc’s practice thrives – after he rejects insurance

Dr. Albert Fuchs is a primary care physician in California whose practice has thrived since dropping insurance. In the doc’s own words: “When doctors break free from the shackles of insurance companies, they can practice medicine the way they always hoped they could.” Not only that, “they can get back to the customer service model in which the paramount incentive is providing the best care.”

Ain’t this the way it’s supposed to work? At least more or less? This physician practices in Beverly Hills where he can charge package rates up front in advance of service, more or less an HMO model.

Americans support employer sponsored health plans

According to Vital Signs from Market Street, Americans generally support employer sponsored health care. Over 80% of those surveyed want to maintain the current system, at least in principle. 88% of Democrats support mandated employer sponsored care. About 153 million people receive their benefits from their jobs.

Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky. If you want to develop a survey asking whether people support the idea of having someone else pay for their coverage, the results are going to be rather predictable, don’t you think?

In California, Docs rushing to exit Medi-Cal

The LA Times reports that California docs are taking money out of their own pockets to pay for medical expenses not covered by Medi-Cal. In February, the Legislature rolled back Medi-Cal payouts by 10%, further exasperating the problem.

As baby boomers begin to age, the crisis in California is only going to get worse. Is the state really prepared to handle medical care of its aging residents 10, 20 years from now?
