About The Health Savings Account Plan Concept
Paying too much for healthcare? If you pay your own health plan premiums and don't have an HSA plan, you're paying way too much in premiums, and missing out on substantial tax savings! No other health plan provides more comprehensive coverage at a lower net cost than a health savings plan.
What is an HSA plan? A health savings account plan is a combination of two things:
- a low cost, high deductible health plan (HDHP), and
- a special tax-qualified savings account (this is the actual HSA itself)
The HSA savings account is similar to an IRA. All contributions you make to the savings account are 100% tax-deductible on the front page of your federal 1040 form. One big difference is that with an HSA, you can withdraw funds at any time on a tax-free basis to pay for routine medical expenses, even those not covered by insurance.
Money in your account rolls over every year and you can add to it every year. At age 65, the account effectively reverts to an IRA account. You can still use it as an HSA if you wish, and in fact, you can pay your Medicare premiums with tax-free dollars from the account.
Double savings. The high deductible health plan will save you a ton on insurance premiums, but that's just for starters. You'll also save on taxes by contributing to the HSA account (deposits are tax-deductible). Because of the tax savings, the first $1500 or so in medical expenses every year actually are subsidized by Uncle Sam. Much better than copays!
